    • write about everything in the question;
    • present a clear overview of main trens, differences or estages are clearly demosntrated;
    • clearly present and highlight key features of the graph;
  • Coherence and Conhesion:
    • logically organise information and ideias (intro, overview, details)...clear progression throughout;
    • link sentences and paragrphs with words like however, therefore, furthermore...
    • Try to also link stages together with at this point, following this, having + pat participle;
  • Lexial Resource:
    • use a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision- synonyms/paraphase; no words like "nice!";
    • use less commons lexical items with some awareness of style and collocation- show that you know how these words fit together;
    • may produce occasional errors in word chois, spelling, word formation;
  • Essentially vocabulary;

    • use a range of sentence types and word orders (but use some simple sentences too!);
    • avoid making mistakes in the majority of your sentences (more than 50%);
    • have good control of grammar and punctuation;

Writing Task 1- Question types

You might be confronted with one of these four options:

  • Graph with a trend:
    • will always feature a period of time;
    • you can talk about what changes during that period of time
  • Comparative graph:
    • usually doesn't feature periods of time or if it does feature periods of time it might just be two different years to compare
  • Process;
  • Map
    • usually what we see is an old map and a new map

Writing Task 1- How to answer the questions

Paragraph 1:

  • introduction

Paragraph 2:

  • overview- use "Overall", "meanwhile"
  • if you write a overview, don't write a conclusion!
  • overview is not optional- it is a requirement of Band 7 writing, and it must be clear.

Paragraph 3:

  • one set of key details- use "with regards", "whereas"
  • select relevant data notes;
  • the vocabulary that you write should be specific for your particular task;
  • make sure that you only present data and not try to expain or interpret the data.

Paragraph 4:

  • a different set of key details;
  • compare information;
  • use "in the first half of the decade instead of saying from 2001 to 2006"
  • be precise and add references- the referencing helps us follow the data ('respectively'). Thy do not have sense of interpretation and avoid repetition too.

It is possible to write a summary (last paragraph) instead of an overview (2º paragraph)- NEVER write both!

Writing Task 1- Model Plan

  • use letters, numbers and symbols instead of writing the analyses in text

1. Don't start do plan the introduction

2. Overview- main trends, differences or stages

3. P3 and P4: what happened? compare the data

Writing Task 1- Vocabullary

Graph:

  • slipped- way of saying that the date/numbers  began to decrease

Writing Task 1- Gaph

  • Follow the direction of the 'slopes'-where the graph shows the values increasing or decreasing.
  • Compare the data, usually the highest value with the lowest value
  • In processes:

    •  Say how many steps the process has;

    • use "appears to be" to avoid slipping into inaccuracy. Ex: "Whereas cement production appears to be composed of seven steps, concrete prodution only consists of two

"Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant"

What we need to do:

  • Select and report the main features;
  • Clearly present and highlights key features- the starting points, the end points, the peaks and the lows.
  • In pie charts: the should make comparisons- there should no figures left out and we need to compare all of the data.

We should include in the answer:

  • Units of measurement
  • !! Common error: is to describe numbers instead of percentages, and vice versa.
  • "aproximately", "around", "about", "roughly"- don't use "nearly"
